A Rose
In a soggy milk carton,
In an overturned trash bin,
In a forgotten alley,
A rose unfurls.
Though the world
May not see its transformation,
It blossoms just the same.
Story behind the poem: I wrote this poem in January for the Bluegrass Accolade. Though it's very short compared to other things I've written, it's still laden with meaning. This poem isn't overtly Christian, and might signify different things to different readers. For me, though, it symbolizes the transformative work God has done in my heart, often in ways most people aren't aware of.
I once heard a sermon on the life of King David that has stuck with me. Most people don't realize that David spent nearly fifteen years as a shepherd boy between being anointed king and rising to the throne of Israel. However, God didn't abandon him during this period. In fact, I believe He used those years of David's life to mold him into the honorable leader he would someday become.
All that being said, this poem goes out to those who feel hidden, insignificant, and trapped in a dark place. This season of your life isn't meaningless - if you let Him, I believe God will use it to build your character, draw you closer to Him, and help you blossom into more of the incredible person He created you to be.
