All is Snow

I creep upstairs to stare through the window. 

All is snow. 

The fields have settled in for a deep slumber, buried beneath piles of pillows as silence runs its course. Forked branches hang low, attempting to skewer dollops of sugar, and hoping perhaps to hear Winter Earth whisper her secrets. She is so still, yet content. Perfectly yielded to her Maker.

A dark-furred animal prints itself against the landscape, trotting beside the creek. Without my glasses, he is a blur. A coyote, maybe? I might be unsure of his identity, but he seems confident in who he is. He sways past shadows and sycamores like a king. 

Hours pass. The sun beats against the hills, and the house is full of chatter. But Nature remains at rest, trusting the snow to cleanse her. Her tatteredness has been draped with glittering robes, and she will carry this joyful secret, even through the coldest nights.
