Gratitude

Dwelling in the patient sunlight,

I breathe in today’s air.

I plant myself in this soil,

Rooted beside others

Who thirst to be watered by

A kind word,

A knowing smile,

A listening heart.

I bow on this earth,

Raising thanks

To the Giver of all good gifts.

In this present moment,

I choose gratitude.

Story behind the poem: I wrote this poem just last week. I wanted to have a Thanksgiving-themed poem to share with you that wasn't too cheesy (turkey and pumpkin pie aren't exactly good poetry material😂). Although it was a little tricky to get started, once the words began flowing, this piece came together very naturally. It might sound strange, but sometimes when I'm writing I can sense God's nearness and feel like He's working in a distinct way. This was one of those times.

I don't know about you, but I find it incredibly challenging to be present. I'm often either dwelling on the past, over-analyzing my current circumstances, or dreaming about or dreading the future. In these moments, Jesus is teaching me to breathe and focus on the blessings around me.

It's become cliché to spend time every Thanksgiving listing what we're grateful for. But this Thanksgiving, I want to lean into this practice in a deeper way, praising God for both the massive and simple things He's done in my life. I'd encourage you to consider doing the same. :)

Here's one of my favorite verses about thankfulness:

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

- Psalm 118:24 (English Standard Version)

Hope this encourages you, friends! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!🦃🍽🍂

P.S. (I can't write about gratitude without thinking of the amazing song by Brandon Lake. If you haven't heard it, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQdfs5S6jyA.)

Beautiful Abbi! Thanks so much for sharing. Love the metaphor with plants and rootedness. It reminds me to stay rooted in gratitude.

Speaking of gratitude, I'm always so grateful that your poetry has a way of making me slow down and breath deeper:) I also get to experience the nearness of God when I read your poems. He's so kind:)
