Something in the Cool Morning Rain
Sadness can comfort,
Tears can relieve,
And something in the cool morning rain
Sets me free.
Morning rain,
Come down.
Drench my aching soul,
Soak my tired bones.
Gray skies,
Open wide.
I want to be like a child
Who dances in puddles
Instead of fearing the storm.
Story Behind the Poem: In early August, I was having a difficult morning, and decided to take a walk up the gravel driveway that leads to our property. The sky was overcast, and the landscape looked as dull and numb as I felt inside. As I walked, the ache inside became almost too much to bear. And then...it started to rain. On another day, I might have rushed back inside to escape the downpour. But on this day, I found the rain refreshing. Invigorating. Healing. I let the water wash over me, and as it did, I got the impression that perhaps through the rain, Jesus was doing a deeper work in my heart. Once I got home, I wrote this poem to help me remember the experience.
I believe what I felt on my walk that morning was a metaphor for the healing power of tears. I’ve found in my own life that taking time to grieve has been essential to healing from hard circumstances. It might not be fun, but Jesus meets us in our brokenness and floods us with hope as we trust in Him. I don’t know what you're facing right now, but I pray that you would have the courage to acknowledge your emotions and process them with God. I'm believing for the both of us that better days are coming!
"You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you." - Matthew 5:4, The Message Bible
